Flagler Beach saw the development of its first home in 1913, when the community was known as Ocean City. Home building was followed by the establishment of a post office and a general store. The city was incorporated in April of 1925.
Today’s Flagler Beach has an old-fashioned, out-of-the-way destination feel to it. The popular sites in and around town are oriented towards nature: the Flagler Beach Pier, six miles of beach, Bulow Plantation Ruins Park and Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area. The ocean, wetlands and park areas provide many opportunities to explore the diversity of the local plant and animal life. Birding and fishing are two of the more popular activities. Just a short drive outside of Flagler Beach is Daytona Beach, a world-renowned tourist destination where something exciting is always happening. The activity of Daytona Beach is a nice complement to Flagler Beach’s relaxed lifestyle. In other words, when you need a change of pace, Daytona’s world-class shopping, dining, nightlife and entertainment is less than 30 miles away. The weather in Flagler Beach is what you’d expect from Florida’s eastern coast: year-round sunshine with temperatures fluctuating from lows in the 40s in January to highs in the 90s in July. Annual rainfall averages about 49 inches, with the most rain falling between June and October. |
